Bear Lake is located in northwestern Manistee County on the borders of Bear Lake and Pleasanton Townships. The area was first settled by Russell Smith in 1863. Town is named for the bear-shape of the lake it is situated on. It became a village in 1893. The community surrounds the 1,800 acre lake which is a great place to fish, swim, sail and boat. There are campgrounds, antique shops and even an 18 hole golf course. Even during the winter the town draws people for the great cross country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and hunting.
The population of Bear Lake is 322 people which has had a 3.14 percent growth since the 2000 census. The median home cost is $89,320 people and the cost of living is 9.60% lower than the U.S. average. Bear Lake public schools spend $5,867 per student and there are about 16 students per teacher.
