Berkley was first settled in the year 1815. At that time, the area was the site of the Ottawa Indian Gardens. It also included a flowing artesian spring that provided the town's water supply until 1926. When the town was formally established, Berkley derived its name from a local farm. The area was incorporated as a village in 1923 and was reincorporated as a city in 1932.
